THIS ITEM IS----This is one of several vintage photos I have up on Ebay right now from a collection from Ida and Louis Mallory and Ida's parents, Mr. & Mrs. Winfried Sawtelle of Lyman & Alfred, Maine. The Mallorys were dog breeders of the Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers. Most photos appear to be from the 1960's, but there are some that are much older. The photos have some curling on the edges, and may have some creasing and wear. The excerpt below (from the Wheaten website http://scwtca.org) tells a little about the background of Ida Sawtelle Mallory.
"New England SCWT Club Honors Ida Mallory with Versatility Trophies The New England SCWT Club is honored to present the Ida Mallory Versatility Trophy to Wheaten Terriers who qualify for a versatility award. Three levels of awards are offered to Wheatens earning AKC titles in agility, conformation, obedience and/or tracking. Tribute to Ida Sawtelle Mallory April 11, 1911 to February 28, 1998 Dogs were always members of the Sawtelle Family at 1030 83rd Street in Brooklyn as Ida grew up. They varied from Boston Bulls to Great Pyrenees . . . so it was almost inevitable that there would be Wheatens. This came in the “person” of Holmenocks Grammachree’s Independence—affectionally known as “Inde.” After graduation from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg, VA, Ida joined her mother, Verna Smith Sawtelle, in caring for their dogs and Ida became active in the formation of the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of America. This activity was concurrent with others such as drama, hiking, canoeing, and spelunking for Ida lived a very full life. A December 1963 letter from Ida and her husband, Lou Mallory, recounts the hosting by “Inde” of the organizational meeting of the SCWTCA on St. Patrick’s Day 1962 at Sawtelle’s home in Brooklyn. Canine members present were Holmenocks Grammachree; her son, Minute Man (usually called Rory); and her daughter, Little Firecracker. Margaret O’Connor, Ida and Eileen Jackson were chosen as President, Vice President and Secretary, respectively. There were fewer than 30 Wheatens in the United States; 6 years later there were almost 250. From the early 1960’s until 1973, Ida bred Grant’s Hill Wheatens at Swan Pond in Lyman, Maine. She and Lou imported and lovingly bred and placed Soft Coated Wheatens and were enthusiastic supporters of the breed. In addition, Ida was the Animal Officer for the local Pine Tree Humane society of which she was also President. She was a frequenter of the State House in Augusta in constant fight for animal rights in the state. Her Pine Tree Animal shelter once was home to 40 dogs; she never turned an animal away that needed help. After Ida closed the shelter because of her poor health, it was disbanded. To honor her 30 years of service, the organization established a scholarship for seniors in animal husbandry at the local high school in her name."
