    This listing is for a unique collection of interesting letters from Thomas G. Bergin to Joseph M. Tierney along with a few clippings as well as Tierney's copy of a very rare booklet of Bergin's poetry from a limited print-run of only 100 copies!
    Thomas Goddard Bergin (1904 – 1987) was an American scholar of Italian literature, particularly notable for his research on Dante's "Divine Comedy" and his translation of it. He was the Sterling Professor of Romance Languages at Yale University, and Master of Timothy Dwight College. Bergin was also the first poet to have his words launched into outer space to orbit the earth.
    Joseph M. Tierney (1941 – 2009) was an American politician who served as a member of the Boston City Council from 1972 to 1987. He was the President of the City Council in 1977, 1979, and from 1983 to 1985. In 1987, Tierney was a candidate for Mayor of Boston, but lost to incumbent Raymond Flynn. He is also noteworthy for having been the of actress Maura Tierney.
