For your consideration is a lot of 19 Letters To Artist John McClelland. Eight are from the 1950’s, Six are from the 1960’s and five are from the 1970’s. There is also a birthday card from his son Kirk. These letters are from family, friends, Woman’s Day, American Artists, Famous Artists Schools, Hettye McCurdy of THE MCCURDYS from Stone Mountain Georgia, Richard Deems the President of the Magazine Division of the Hearst Corporation and others. The letters and envelopes are in pre-owned condition. Some are typed and some are hand written.
John Harold McClelland passed away February 16, 2016 at the age of 96. He was born in Stone Mountain, Georgia. He knew at an early age he wanted to be an artist being influenced by the great illustrators of the 1930’s. While in High School, he had a basement art studio where he honed his skills. He attended Auburn University, The Grand Central School of Art and the Art Career School in NY. He hoped to be an illustrator at a magazine but instead he was a draftsman stationed in Texas during WWII illustrating training manuals. By 1950, McClelland was one of the top magazine illustrators in the country. When his daughter, Susan was 2 and a half, he painted her portrait which launched him on another career. He and his family lived in Connecticut for 30 years. Thank you for your time.
