    Description

Herpa 507615 Crossair McDonnell Douglas MD-83 McDonalds McPlane 1:500 Scale New Retired by Herpa in 2000
Crossiar's MD 83 operated on charter lights together with Mc Donald's Switzerland and Hotelplan from Zurich to holiday resorts as Mallorca, Canarian Islands, Greece, Turkey. Inside, the stewardesses wore MCDonald caps, the leather seats are red with yellow M on the headrests and they served big macs for lunch. The Swiss seemrd to love traveling hamburgers. McPlane was the latest and hottest civilian airplane to be spotted in the Swiss and European skies. It is a joint venture of Crossair (a subsidary company of Swissair), Hotelplan (a major Swiss travel agency) and McDonald's Restaurants. The idea for the McPlane was originally thought up by the child of a Crossair manager - asking his dad why he couldn't have a hamburger on a plane. The catchy design was essential for a fun plane and a they succeeded in that. The interior was also coordinated: all 161 seats were coated by red leather. The catering, of course, is cuisine à la McDonald: the well known burgers, side dishes and sweeties are served. Almost everything from your favourite eating place - with one important exception: no orders accepted for french fries! There's no fryers in the galley kitchen for safety reasons. McPlane was not a business, but rather a family plane and it mainly serves holiday destinations in Europe and Near East. Disneyland Europe at Paris, was one of them but also many places in the Mediterrean Sea. During the holidays a special McDonald's hostess helps the regular cabin crew. HB-IUH had a Swissair livery before it was transferred to Shannon, Ireland, where customization took place. An american style opening party for the McPlane was held at Crossair's home base, Basle airport, on Friday March 29th. Three days later, on Monday April 1st, McPlane took off for its first regular flight from Basle-Mulhouse to Heraklion on the Greek island Crete. Passenger feedback was very positive.
Crossair Ltd. Co. for Regional European Air Transport (German: Crossair AG für europäischen Regionalluftverkehr) was a regional airline headquartered on the grounds of EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg in Saint-Louis, Haut-Rhin, France, near Basel, Switzerland. It became Swiss International Air Lines after taking over most of the assets of Swissair following that airline's bankruptcy in 2002. Founded as a private company under the name Business Flyers Basle by Moritz Suter, it changed to Crossair on 18 November 1978, before the beginning of scheduled services on 2 July 1979 with flights from Zürich to Nuremberg, Innsbruck and Klagenfurt.[citation needed] It was headquartered at Zürich International Airport in Kloten in 1985. It added charter services for major shareholder Swissair in November 1995. On 31 March 2002, Swissair passed out of existence as most of its assets were taken over by Crossair which then changed names to Swiss International Air Lines.
