Unit - No. 158 Squadron - after many losses on bombers (seven in succession) carrying “F” for “Freddie”, the next replacement was named “Friday the 13th” (by Flight Officer Cliff R R Smith) and carried an inverted horseshoe and a grim reaper symbol to remove the myth of bad luck. It worked and this
bomber became one of the luckiest aircraft of the war, completing a record 128 missions (reputedly the largest number of missions of any bomber, Axis or Allied.
Campaign - RAF Lisset, Yorks, 1944-45
Markings - green and brown and black camouflage with NP F in red with red/blue/white/yellow roundel and blue/red roundels on wings. ‘Friday the 13th’ with skull and bones and scythe with lucky horseshoe and bomb mission markings under cockpit. Yellow and black diagonal stripes on tail with other Allied markings. White rings on engines with black propellors. Comes with stand and wheels. Limited edition paperwork included.
Model - the Halifax was one of the British front-line, four-engine heavy bombers of the RAF during WWII. A contemporary of the famous Avro Lancaster, the Halifax remained in service until the end of the war. This plane’s recreation is preserved at Elvington. She carries French Air Force markings on one side - N - Novembre of 346 ‘Guyenne’ Squadron to commemorate the two French bomber squadrons that uniquely served at RAF Elvington during the war.
